The successful use of alternative water sources for hydraulic fracturing operations was recognized on March 23, 2011 when Encana and Apache Canada jointly received a Responsible Canadian Energy award from the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) for the Debolt Water Treatment Plant.
Located in the Horn River Basin region of northeastern British Columbia, the Debolt plant is the first project of its kind in Canada. It was developed to treat water from the Debolt Formation, a deep, sub-surface, non-potable aquifer holding saline, sour (containing hydrogen sulfide) water.
The plant has significantly reduced surface water use and is expected to fulfil a minimum of 80 percent of the water needed by Encana and Apache for hydraulic fracturing operations in the Two Island Lake area of the Horn River Basin. Encana and Apache designed and built the Debolt Water Treatment Plant, which has been in operation since June 2010.
Visit the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers website for more information about Encana and Apache's Responsible Canadian Energy award for the Debolt Water Treatment Plant.
